A very real part of sport for an athlete is overcoming fear. I know this to be true at every level of the game.
Jonah
Barrington, six time British Open Champion and author of Murder on the
Squash Court (one of my favourite squash books), explains one of the
mental skills necessary to win.
"When
some squash players find themselves close to winning they try to hurry
up the process. In their mind's eye they are already seeing the figure
nine when they reach six and they forget about the intervening seven
and eight points altogether. That leap of imagination from six to nine
shows a lack of experience and makes winning the necessary points a hit
and miss affair. Many players start to play negatively and go into
their shells.
On the point of victory these are the things to remember:
- Don't make a gift of the game to your opponent by rushing and making silly errors
- Don't try to jump from 6 to 9 without going through the normal channels
- Play calmly and deliberately
- Stay positive"
I couldn't have put it better myself.
